At 19, I walked into a local hospital and asked how to become a chaplain. The hospital chaplain kindly conducted a brief interview, then pointed toward the long hallways to start visiting patients — listening to their pain and praying for their healing. Rather than classroom or conference training, it was an immediate plunge into compassionate care for people on their worst day.
A few years later I repeated the tactic with a police department. After a much more thorough process, I became a chaplain for law enforcement officers. Rather than the predictability of a hospital, this new ministry meant wearing a vest and being on call 24/7 — countless hours riding along with officers, being a listening ear and caring heart as they processed unimaginable evil.
On scene — the calls chaplains are trained to answer, alongside the first responders they serve.
This work continued with police departments in Burbank, California; Mobile, Alabama; and Louisville, Kentucky as my primary work of pastoral ministry moved us around the country. Now, coming home to the west coast, I continue serving as a law enforcement chaplain in Los Angeles and challenge others to do the same.

Living as salt and light in this dark and decaying world will prompt others to ask about the hope that is in us. We must be always ready to give that answer.
The goal is simple: bring hope to those on the front lines.
